Baltimore Area Faith Leaders Unite Against Slots in Maryland
Baltimore, MD – On Monday, August 18, 2008, Marylanders United to Stop Slots will join over 30 pastors and ministers, representing tens of thousands of voters, from the Baltimore area to discuss the faith community’s response to the slots constitutional amendment to bring 15,000 slot machines to Maryland. This gathering of faith leaders in Baltimore will reaffirm their position that slots are not the answer for Maryland. Annapolis insiders are far too willing to sacrifice Maryland’s neighborhoods and values for the interests of gambling lobbyists. In hard economic times, the state should not be pushing to take hundreds of millions of dollars that Maryland families worked hard to earn and give it to out-of-state gambling executives.
Faith leaders across the state know too well the harm large scale gambling can do. Slot casinos bring increased crime, addiction, and bankruptcy while destroying Maryland families, neighborhoods and communities. While the pro-slots group will tell you there is nothing to fear, slots will take money away from small businesses, churches and charities. It is clear voters can’t trust insiders in Annapolis with their pocketbooks, values or communities.
